Dear colleague,

The following Special Issue of which Dr. Pedro Vicente Mauri, Dr. Miran Taha, and Dr. Lorena Parra are the guest editor will be published in Frontiers in Sensors, and is now open to receive submissions for peer-review and possible publication (ISSN 2673-5067; https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sensors).

Special Issue: Sensor Networks for Agriculture 4.0

Website: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/26052/sensor-networks-for-agriculture-40

Deadline for the Abstract: 02 November 2021

Deadline for the Full paper: 10 January 2022

*Special Issue Scope*

We are on the edge of a technological revolution in the primary sector. The sensor networks allow the collection of data, which can be used to improve crop production management. While precision agriculture focuses on optimizing resource allocation, Agriculture 4.0 is a broader concept based on the inclusion of Communication and Information Technologies (CIT) in agricultural management. The inclusion of smart devices and smart machinery helps the farmers obtain data about their crops, and artificial intelligence is the basis for the decision support tools. With these technologies, the farmers can improve the sustainability and profitability of their lands and the traceability of their inputs and outputs. These new opportunities are essential to accomplish the future expected requirements for agriculture.

Currently, we can find several examples of the multiple benefits of combining CIT with farming systems. The data gathering from the soil is vital to schedule the water irrigation. At the same time, plant vigor monitoring can be used to define the amount of fertilizer to determine if it is needed. On the other hand, image processing of the crop is of greater utility in determining the harvesting time or even predicting the yield quantity or quality. The in-situ climatic data can be useful in estimating the possibility of the development of pests and diseases. This information can be confirmed with cameras in the fields, which monitor the changes in the plants. As described before, several examples can be found. Nonetheless, most of those examples must be adapted for the specifications of particular crops and consider the particularities of the different environments. Therefore, many efforts still need to have robust and useful technologies available for farmers to reach a truly Agriculture 4.0.
