The Ph.D. course in History, Criticism and Conservation of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua is promoting the organisation of the International Conference entitled “Interrupted Stories. The recognition and valorisation of forgotten heritage”.

The conference will be held in Padua on 25 and 26 November 2021 and is an opportunity for Ph.D. students from national and international universities to come together and share their expertise. The sessions will be dedicated to exploring theoretical and methodological issues related to the disciplines of Archaeology, History of Art and Performing Arts, with particular attention to the opportunities for the professional and personal growth of young researchers.

The conference aims to investigate the underlying complexities in the process of historical reconstruction intrinsic in every research project. These involve the gap in various forms of documentation that disrupt the history of an artwork, an artifact, a place, and a civilisation.

Applicants are invited to submit proposals that investigate the following topics:

the loss or incompleteness of material or documentary data: methodologies for historical reconstruction and the narration of memories of the past;

decontextualised artworks, defunctionalised objects and places: recognition, study, conservation and valorisation, namely the reconstruction of geographical, social, cultural, economic and technological relations;

unfinished, fragmentary or incomplete materials, artworks, objects: recognition, study, conservation and valorisation;

phenomena that damage the testimony of the past: crimes against cultural heritage;

objects, places that have remained ‘mute’: cultural heritage once comprehensible and now apparently meaningless due to physical, cultural, social or economic changes;

the role of censorship and criticism in art and the performing arts, between luck and oblivion;

interrupted and/or forgotten ‘stories’: communication, storytelling and valorisation;

intangible cultural heritage: study, conservation and valorisation of forgotten customs, traditions and rites (particularly following the recent national ratification of the Faro Convention);

people in history who have dedicated their lives to the conservation and valorisation of cultural heritage;

contemporary archaeological, art-historical, musical, theatrical and cinematographic research: new perspectives for investigation and recovery.

The conference will be organised in a blended mode (in-person and remotely) to ensure compliance with the regulations for contrasting the spread of the Sars-CoV-2 virus and allow the greatest possible participation of Ph.D. students from outside Padua.

Ph.D. students enrolled in cycles XXXIII, XXXIV, XXXV and XXXVI (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) are invited to participate with individual or co-authored proposals. Preference will be given to presentations of research projects in an advanced state of progression in order to provide thorough debate.

The proposals received (papers and posters) will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee, composed of professors and Ph.D. students representing the main research areas of the Department of Cultural Heritage and of the Ph.D. Course (Archaeology, History of Art, Musicology, Theatre and History of Performing Arts).

Contributions admitted to the Conference will be collected as articles in a volume published by Padova University Press. The publication will undergo a scientific review process.
