Call for Papers (Special Issue): The Future of Maritime Cooperation Under the Belt & Road Initiative

BRIQ (Belt & Road Initiative Quarterly) is currently seeking submissions for a special issue on “The Future of Maritime Cooperation Under the Belt & Road Initiative”.

During his visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia in 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the “One Belt One Road Initiative” (henceforth referred to as the Belt & Road Initiative, or BRI). With as many as 70 countries having already joined this initiative since its enunciation in 2013, BRI exhibits a real potential to bring about a whole new world order.

One could argue that the worldwide growing interest in BRI calls into question the prevalence of unnecessary conflicts and tensions in the current world order, while pointing at the emergence of historic opportunities for harmonious cooperation. Maritime cooperation is an area where such historic opportunities are increasingly pronounced. Covering nearly three quarters of the Earth’s surface, seas and inland waters constitute a major source of natural resources. Moreover, maritime and waterway networks are of tremendous geo-economic importance as the backbone of world trade.

What role can BRI play in solving the disputes that have been overflowing from the seas onto the land? How can BRI’s vision of harmonious and peaceful cooperation be realized in the sphere of maritime security?

Based on the context depicted above, the Belt & Road Initiative Quarterly (BRIQ) calls for academic articles, essays and book reviews that address issues related to maritime security and cooperation:

Dynamics of conflict and cooperation in the Mediterranean, Aegean and/or the Black Sea,

Dynamics of conflict and cooperation surrounding the Pacific Ocean,

The maritime geopolitics of BRI-participating regions or countries,

Case studies of BRI-participating countries engaged in maritime cooperation and/or conflict,

The common historical and cultural legacy of cooperation and peaceful exchange on the sea routes,

Ecological approaches to maritime cooperation and conflict,

Imperialism and maritime domination in today’s world,

Problems and policy recommendations for global maritime governance, etc.

Journal Information and Submission Guidelines

BRIQ (Belt & Road Initiative Quarterly) is a scholarly journal of international politics, economy, and culture.

Belt and Road Initiative Quarterly (BRIQ) features a broad range of content, from academic articles to book reviews, review essays, interviews, news reports, and feature articles.

The Editorial Board can issue calls for papers for special issues and invite authors to contribute manuscripts; however, it also welcomes unsolicited submissions.

Submissions are invited in English or Turkish. All submissions are to include a short biography (150-word limit) and should be sent as Microsoft Word attachments to briq@briqjournal.com . Articles or other content that have been previously published or are under review by other journals will not be considered for publication.

BRIQ follows American Psychology Association style (6th edition, https://www.apastyle.org) and uses American English spelling.

BRIQ uses a double-blind review process for all academic articles.

Academic articles should be between 5,000 and 9,000 words in length, including abstracts, notes, references, and all other content. Please supply a cover page that includes complete author information, and a fully anonymized manuscript that also contains an abstract (200- word limit) and 5 keywords.

Book reviews should not exceed 1,000 words; review essays covering two or more works can be up to 3,000 words.

News reports consisting of brief analyses of news developments should not exceed 1,500 words; feature articles combining reporting and analysis can be up to 3,500 words.
