“The State of Black America”

Center for Urban Renewal and Education

Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy

CURE is a 501c3 organization devoted to developing and promulgating policy solutions focused on America’s distressed zip codes. The Claremont Institute is a 501c3 organization that seeks to restore the principles of the American Founding to their rightful, preeminent authority in our national life. In the projected “State of Black America” report these organizations aim to explore the latest scholarship into the character, shape, and tendencies of life in the United States for black Americans. The report will be truly comprehensive in scope, covering economics, history, culture, legal contexts, education, health care, religion, and political efficacy. It will highlight the interaction between public policies and community development, and it welcomes researches at the micro and macro levels of analysis, quantitative and qualitative. The target audience is scholars, as well as policy-makers and practitioners, including clergy leaders on the front lines of black communities.

Likely essay topics include such as the following:

Black economic progress since the New Deal

Education in black communities: policies and practices

Wealth accumulation in black households (a developmental view)

Religious influences on the culture and politics of black communities

Changing legal norms related to black communities

Integration and assimilation among black Americans (a comparative perspective)

Measures of political efficacy in black communities (developmental and comparative views)

Contributions to United States history

Prospects of black self-determination

Meaning of U. S. citizenship in black communities

Determinants of health and safety in black communities

Measures of progress

Patterns of dominance and submission

Dynamics of leadership

This is a suggestive rather than exhaustive listing of possibilities. The goal of the report is to elicit the best conceptual formulations for an accurate portrait of the “state of black America,” and to that end the report will depend highly upon the demonstrated excellence of the scholars who undertake it.

The report will be published at Washington, D.C. by CURE, which serves as a point of contact for policy-makers and clergy leaders and as a resource for academics, professionals, graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and research associates.

Contributors are highly encouraged to submit their proposals to review via e-mail at admin@urbancure.org. Please refer to “The State of Black America” in the cover letter and include “Research Report” in the email subject-line.

Essay submissions depending upon data files will require to make them compliant with STATA analysis. Accepted contributions will also be required to submit their data files as well as their essays. Each published paper will appear beneath the author’s affiliation in the published report.

All accepted papers will be published online as well as in a print publication, with exclusive rights granted to the publisher. Readers will have free access to read and/or cite the report.

Proposals are invited to arrive no later than December 20, 2020. Accepted papers will be compensated in the sum of $7,500, due upon publication. To qualify for publication, accepted papers must be submitted by May 31, 2021.
