Linguistic Navigation Among The Caribbean Diaspora

My research centered on the use of language by speakers of West Indian dialects living in the United States. Through interviews and surveys, I gained insight into their linguistics in various professional, social, and personal spaces. The results made several points evident: one, these individuals change the way they speak in certain situations; two, academia and workplace environments discourage their creoles in favor of standardized American English; and three, they never use their creoles to any extent with non-speakers.
Since there had yet to be a study of this nature relative to Caribbean Americans, I intended to fill that gap with this research project. My hope is that it prompts other underserved, unrecognized communities to delve deeper into their language choices and make meaning of how their speeches influence their members.
