Current Development Trends for Designing of Novel Cardiovascular Stent in Combating Coronary Artery Disease
Call for Papers

Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This disease is characterized by the progressive, often decades long, occlusion of one or more of the four coronary arteries that deliver blood to the myocardium. The cause of the slow progressive occlusion is the intimal protrusion of plaques. As plaque size gradually overwhelms arterial remodeling, luminal narrowing and endothelial dysfunction can eventually promote plaque rupture, followed by acute thrombus formation and the complete sudden occlusion of the coronary artery.

Coronary artery stents used for the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease developed the practice of interventional cardiology after they were first introduced in the mid-1980s. Since then—with dozens of researchers and companies involved in the development of new and innovative antirestenotic drug-eluting stents, polymeric coatings, and bioabsorbable stents—stent platforms have made significant progress in this area. Today, the major challenge is the conception of the “ideal” coronary stent designed to respond to an individual patient’s health.

This special issue aims to provide an overview of research updates on the novel key points related to cardiovascular stent design approaches, such as novel biodegradable stent scaffolds used in animal models of disease and clinical practice, why some failed in the past, how the others perform at the present, and what can we improve in the future; the metal-polymer coating composite stents or drug-eluting stents to increase hemocompatibility and biocompatibility; the cardiovascular problems associated with current stents; and the plaque preparation before stenting (rotablation, cutting, shockwave, etc.). Both primary research articles and review articles regarding state-of-the-art cardiovascular stent research are welcomed, with the aim of collating the results of innovative stent approaches and providing further insights into this significant and rapidly developing research area.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

Cardiovascular stents based on biodegradable/bioresorbable polymers
Polymer-free biodegradable metal cardiovascular stent platforms
Fully biodegradable scaffolds and metal-polymer (drug) composite cardiovascular stents
Drug delivery mediated by cardiovascular stent-targeted magnetic nanoparticles
Plaque preparation before cardiovascular stenting (rotablation, cutting, shockwave, etc.)
